Historical narratives and cultural statements – this exhibition presents a curated selection of Orientalist photography from 1870s – 1880s, featuring the works of G. Sarolides, the Zangaki Brothers, Abdullah Freres, Hippolyte Arnoux, and others.
The collection reveals the variety of artistic perceptions, depicted on large-format cameras with glass plate negatives, that were printed in limited numbers. These albumen prints (19th century innovation, widely used for commercial photography, travel albums, and portraiture) transcend mere documentation that reflect the rapidly modernizing Oriental world.
