Marquetry cityscape panel from the workshop of Paul Louis Spindler and Jean Charles Spindler. The composition depicts birds perched upon thatched roofs in the foreground and the Strasbourg Cathedral in the background. Signed lower right "Spindler". Presented in a matching wooden frame.
Paul Louis Spindler (1906-1980) was a French marquetry artist associated with the revival of pictorial wood inlay in Alsace during the mid twentieth century. He continued the tradition established by his father Charles Spindler, producing architectural and landscape compositions in marquetry. Jean Charles Spindler born 1949 worked within the same workshop tradition, contributing to the continuation and development of Alsatian marquetry in the post war period.
