A French barrel-shaped vase in cut crystal by Cristallerie de Saint-Louis, circa 1935. The body is decorated with vertical fluting and a broad band of diamond cutting around the shoulder, with a silver-mounted rim. Acid-etched Saint-Louis France mark to the underside. Preserved in great condition.
Founded in Lorraine in 1586, Saint-Louis is France’s oldest glass manufacturer. It became a royal glassworks in 1767 and produced its first crystal in 1781, before adopting the name Cristallerie Royale de Saint-Louis in 1829. The manufacture became known for mouth-blown, hand-cut, engraved, and gilded crystal tableware, lighting, and decorative objects.
During the early 20th century, Saint-Louis responded to Art Nouveau and Art Deco through new geometric forms and cutting patterns, working with designers including Paul Nicolas, Jean Sala, Jean Luce, Michel Colle, and Maurice Dufrene. From 1936, the factory began applying an acid-etched Saint-Louis France signature to the underside of its crystal, although marking was not yet systematic on every piece.
