About

Reverse-painted on glass portrait of Qajar couple, with four reverse-painted mirror panels, encased in a wooden frame with hammered copper mounts. The frame is richly decorated with scrolls, floral motifs, and acanthus leaves, with European-style triumph curved top.

The portrait itself is created in Verre Eglomise technique with use of opaque pigments and enamels, partially gilt on white wash ground. It combines a common theme from traditional Qajar art (a courtly couple in a loving embrace) and strong French influence, that is visible in attires of the depicted figures. The male figure's official military red uniform and the distinctive French bicorn hat are emblematic of the Napoleonic era's fashion. The lady is wearing a fashionable dress and jewels.
