A monumental pair of electrified candelabras in patinated bronze and cast iron, originally designed as gasoliers. Each features a fluted, tapering column rising from a triform base formed by three seated female sphinx monopodia. The upper section branches into five scrolling arms with flame-shaped glass shades.
The foundry of J.G. Buckens was established in Liege, Belgium, in the early 19th century by Jean Guillaume Buckens (1802–1872), a bronzier and designer known for his monumental decorative works in iron and bronze. His workshop produced streetlamps, gasoliers, and architectural ornamentation for civic buildings and public spaces in Belgium and abroad. Buckens participated in major industrial exhibitions in the 1850s and 1860s, including Paris and London, and was noted for combining cast iron with ornamental bronze in the prevailing historicist styles of the period.
