About
Pair of French Neo-Classical ormolu urns with two handles on each and square bases. Decorated with high relief with figures Baccus, Pan, and other characters at the celebration.
Maker stamps "JG&Sons" and numbers 440 are visible on the bases next to the screws.
The cast is made after the so-called "Townley Vase". It was a massive Roman marble vase from the 2nd Century CE discovered by Scottish archaeologist and antiquities trader Gavin Hamilton in 1773, in Monte Cagnolo, Lazio, Italy. It was named for the English collector Charles Townley, who bought it from Hamilton for £250 in 1774. The original "Townley Vase" is now exhibited in the British Museum.
