About

Fine entomology collectible, a well preserved male Comet Moth under a glass dome, on a wooden base. Argema mittrei (commonly known as Comet Moth or Madagascan Moon Moth) are found in rain forests of Madagascar, and were was first described by French entomologist Felix Edouard Guerin-Meneville in 1847. Due to loss of their natural habitat, these world's largest silk moths are rare in wild.

Entomology collections became popular in the 16th and 17th centuries as part of the Renaissance curiosity cabinets. Collectors were fascinated by the diversity and beauty of insects, often viewing them as miniature works of art.
