About

Impressive scale, massive and heavy oak refectory table made in the 17th Century, visibly altered with later elements. The design features an exceptionally long plank top constructed from multiple oak boards resting above a simple moulded frieze. The base is raised on six substantial turned and block-carved supports united by peripheral stretchers. Preserved in great antique condition, with beautiful wear and patina to the older elements.

Refectory tables originated in the dining halls of monasteries, colleges, and manor houses, where their large scale accommodated communal dining. Traditionally constructed from solid oak, they were designed for durability and continuous use.
