Exceptional large Flemish historical tapestry, attributed to Brussel tapestry studio, Belgium. The composition illustrates one of the most famous tactical maneuvers of the Carthaginian general Hannibal Barca – his ingenious use of flaming-horned cattle to deceive the Romans during the Battle of Ager Falernus in 217 BC. Notable inscription in Latin states: “Hanibal Igne Taurorum Cornibus Imposito Noctu Montem Invadit.” The border is adorned with distinctive floral and fruit garlands, cameos of military and mythological figures, including Apollo, Artemis, and others. Preserved in good antique condition, restored – patch inserts, reinforcements, new lining and borders. Visible signs of aging – color fading, some thread pulling and loosened sections, but overall no structural damages.
