Art Deco cut glass bowl, with basket weave cut decoration across the body and silver plated rim and handles. Marked "WH&S" near one of the handles. Preserved in great antique condition.
William Hutton & Sons Ltd was founded in Birmingham in 1800 and moved to Sheffield in 1832. The firm operated as William Hutton & Sons from 1864 and as William Hutton & Sons Ltd between 1893 and 1930.
The company maintained premises in West Street, Sheffield; Hanley Street, Birmingham; and later a London office at 11 Warwick Court, High Holborn (1922), with showrooms at 7 Farringdon Road, London (1914). In 1930 the goodwill of the firm was transferred to James Dixon & Sons Ltd. During the late 19th century the firm developed a nickel alloy marketed as British Plate, marked BP on flatware. The WH&S mark corresponds to production prior to 1930.
