A Balinese hardwood relief, probably teak, carved in high relief with figures from the Ramayana among dense foliage, birds, and animals, the principal figures shown in elaborate headdresses and jewellery. The fragment is mounted on a later black base.
The Ramayana, one of the great Sanskrit epics of India, recounts the story of Prince Rama, the abduction of his wife Sita by Ravana, and her rescue with the aid of Hanuman. The epic became deeply embedded in Balinese visual and performing arts, and its episodes were frequently represented in temple sculpture, architectural carving, painting, dance, and theatre.
