Vintage (1980s) Chinese Export oval porcelain serving bowl with a domed cover and side handles, accompanied by its original stand. Richly decorated in the Fitzhugh pattern. Decorated in iron-red with floral sprays, stylized borders, and the Great Seal of the United States bearing the motto "E Pluribus Unum," a Latin phrase that translates to "out of many, one" or "from many, one" – it is a traditional national motto of the United States. Marked "1815 CHINA" to the underside, as a pattern or commemorative mark, not a date of manufacture. 8 matching pieces are available and may be purchased individually or as a set. The price is listed per piece, e.g. a set of a bowl, a lid, and a stand. Preserved in great condition with minor wear consistent with age.
The Fitzhugh pattern was developed for the Chinese Export market during the late eighteenth century (c. 1770s) and became one of the most successful decorative services produced for European and American clients. Characterized by dense floral ornament arranged around a central reserve, the pattern was frequently adapted to incorporate armorial bearings, monograms, and civic emblems commissioned by individual customers. During the twentieth century, Chinese porcelain workshops continued to produce Fitzhugh-inspired wares using traditional decorative techniques for the international market.
