Haume Bamum mask with wood, cowrie shells and fabric. The Bamum religion placed great emphasis on ancestral spirits which were embodied in the skulls of the deceased ancestors. Masks and representations of the head also had importance in rituals and ceremonies. In some cases, as in this mask, you can find castanets mounted on the face for sound.
