About

An oil on canvas by American painter Francis Coates Jones, depicting a group of classically dressed figures in a garden setting. Three young women occupy the foreground, while an elderly seated man reads from a scroll beside a younger companion. Jones combines an academic treatment of the figures with a lighter, more atmospheric handling of the surrounding foliage and flowers. Signed "Francis C. Jones" at the lower left. Mounted in original giltwood frame.

Francis Coates Jones (1857-1932) was an American painter known for figure subjects, interiors, and garden scenes. Born in Baltimore, he studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and Academie Julian under William-Adolphe Bouguereau and Jules Joseph Lefebvre. After settling in New York, he exhibited widely, taught at the National Academy of Design, and served as a trustee of The Metropolitan Museum of Art from 1917 to 1930. His work is represented in American museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and Art Institute of Chicago.
