Aref El Rayess (1928 – 2005) was a prominent Lebanese painter and sculptor. He began his career as a self-taught artist in 1948, exhibiting his work for the first time. His artistic journey took him from Lebanon to Africa, Senegal, and Paris, where he studied under renowned artists like Fernand Léger, André Lhote, Marcel Marceau, and Ossip Zadkine. He also attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. He later studied in Florence, Rome, and returned to Lebanon in 1963.

Aref El Rayess, a multifaceted artist, evolved his unique style throughout his career, tackling themes that highlighted the unity of humanity, nature, and history. His art addressed global issues, such as "Man and the Third World" in the 1960s and unconventional topics like brothels near Beirut's Martyrs' Square in the early 1970s.
