About

Pair of Late 19th century Chinese blue flambe glazed ceramic vases with French ormolu mounts – pierced rocaille base and wreath top rim. Two small decorative handles at the neck of the vases. The glazed surface displays minor wear due to age and natural craquelure. Overall great condition.

Mounting objects with ormolu (or "bronze dore”) became exceptionally popular from the 17th century onwards in Europe. Craftsmen used ormolu for the decorative mountings of furniture, clocks, lighting, and especially Chinese porcelain.

Ceramics coming from the East were highly valued, therefore, they were enhanced with ormolu. This was clear evidence of cultural exchanges and appreciations at the time.
