Large temple drum from Shanxi Province, China. Wooden barrel-shaped base is hand-painted with black lacquer and the drumheads are stretched with cowhide and secured with brass rivets. Three bronze handles are attached to the body of the drum.
This drum of impressive size still produces a powerful sound.
Shanxi province in northern China has a longstanding tradition of crafting large temple drums, known as "Shanxi Guzhang" in Chinese. These drums hold immense cultural and historical value, being regarded as significant cultural artifacts.
