Brown ink drawing on handmade paper, depicting a seated oriental woman. Signed "D.Morelli" and dated (18)89, Napoli (Naples), on the lower left.
Domenico Morelli (1823-1901) was a director of Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples. Most of his works are painted on historical themes, and he worked in Romantic and Symbolist styles. Morelli's collection includes a small but distinctive number of Orientalist paintings. He never appears to have visited the Middle East, but he was diligently studying photographs taken in the Middle East.
