In this painting, the artist depicted a scene in Thebes, one of the former capitals of Egypt. The cityscape is painted in all details: buildings, a sphinx, faraway mountains in the background, and groups of people of different origins and occupations. Signed at the lower left with initials and dated “Thebes/ WM 1841”.
William James Müller (1812-1845) was a British artist of Prussian descent, landscape and figure painter, and the best-known artist of the Bristol School.
