Painting of cityscape with a view of Schwanenburg Castle, Cleves (German: Kleve). The castle was exposed to a massive bombardment on the 7th of October, 1944. The historic center of Kleve, including the Swan tower, was destroyed and renovated only in 1953.

Francis Wynne Thomas (1907-1989) was an R.A.F. (Royal Air Force) officer during WW2.
