A full-color oil on canvas sketch for a monumental artwork by Soviet artist Mikhail Poplavsky. Depicts a night scene in the city of Donbas during World War 2. Signed lower left in Cyrillic "M. Poplavsky" and dated 1956.

Mikhail Poplavsky (1914-1994) was a Member of the Union of Artists of the USSR. In 1929, his family moved to Ukraine in the Donbas region. He studied at the Art Institute of Odessa, then at Leningrad. He is particularly interested in the mining landscape and the miners of the Donbas region.
