A fragmentary painting after the famous "Miss Nightingale at Scutari, 1854", also known as "The Lady with the Lamp", by Henrietta Rae, that she created in 1891. It is made in warm brown tones and has a plain background, unlike the well-known masterpiece.
The original art piece is a romanticized three-quarter-length portrait of Nightingale, depicted as a young lady swathed in a white shawl, clutching an oil light, looking down on a wounded soldier, his redcoat thrown over his shoulders with its arms around his neck. Other injured troops may be seen in the background, behind military flags.
Signed "W" on the bottom.
