"La Belle Sultan" is a portrait of a Sultana in Naïve style. The lady is sitting on a red patterned carpet, in a palace room, adorned with vases and flowers. Behind her, an arch opens a view of the night blue sky and a mosque. Sultana’s dress is painted with intricate details of beautiful pink fabric, a turban with an emerald and feathers, and golden jewelry. She holds a fan with a portrait of a man.
Nina Barka (real name Marie Smirsky) was originally from Odessa (Russian Empire). In the early 1920's she moved to France and became a French citizen. Marie created high fashion models under the “Nina” brand, named after her artistic pseudonym Nina Barka, and painted pictorial fantasies in a Naïve style. Her works were inspired by Russian (Slavic), Byzantine, and Middle Eastern themes.
